A series of Fashion Designs I did when I was in Secondary 2, some of which had been displayed in the art gallery before when we did a mini exhibition project.

This series was drawn on paper with pen and markers, scanned and edited with Photoshop.

During that time, I was immensely into the art of fashion, especially couture. The bolder, the more extravagant, the better. While my choice of colours were largely limited by the number of markers I had, the bold colours provided an extra edge to my designs. Back then, my drawing style was highly stylised as seen below with the elongated limbs and representational figures. Many of my friends had critiqued it as unreal, too skinny, but I was stubbornly insisted on it. Looking back, this stylisation, while unreal and 'too skinny', had to a certain extent, added to the charm of my past works.

Artwork - Odyssey of the Mind 'The Egoists' T-Shirt Design
7:13 PM

This series of T-shirts are made for my Odyssey of the Mind (OM) Team along with our coaches. It was referenced from Alice in Wonderland of which we had adopted for our Long Term Problem.
Despite the hours of conceptualisation and designing, the shirt was never made as there was some pricing issues.. This was designed somewhere last year.

For each character design, I sought to encapsulate the unique qualities of each character, with references to both the original fairy tale as well as our very own OM representation of it.

The colour of the shirt (hot pink) is meant to create a bold statement.

This design was done for my very own CCA, it is actually a collaboration between myself and Sec2 AEP junior - Gracia Fei. Though the background of the design is white, it is meant to signify a negative space, our base colour chosen is actually cream or ivory.

We both simultaneously agreed that this design approach would be good as it is one that has yet to be adopted for other CCA t-shirts and there is much to expand on in terms of the drawings. Hence after brainstorming on the different elements we could include eg. computers, headphones, robots... etc, we came up with a rough composition and sketched it on paper.

Once that was done, we proceeded to ink it using black marker pens. The colours were digitally added in by myself on photoshop, where I amended some flaws and cleaned up the image.

Artwork - INSPIRE'12 XinYao Concert Designs

This year, being part of a Youth For Causes group called INSPIRE'12, I was in charge of all design components which includes poster, ticket, programme booklet, and certificates. The following shows some concepts and ideas that develop over time.

At first, since the concert was called 'Heartbeat', the initial imagery that hit me was of course, a heart. In order to incorporate both the terms 'beat' and the concert element into it, I thought that creating the shape of a musical note using negative space across the heart would well convey this in a simplistic and direct manner. I wanted the overall feel of the concert poster to be appealing, dynamic, yet clear cut, as seen bu the solid lines from the elements and the fonts. I used cherry red and teal as the main colours as I felt that the colours complemented each other very well and it was a good balance between warm and cool colours.

To add an interesting element to the poster, I used a long striped teal line to cut across the side of the poster. The space cut out on the right side felt too empty so I incorporate footprints to show the dance aspects of the concert.

Certificate Design

For the ticket, concert booklet and certificate design, I retained the core elements of the poster and applied them accordingly.

Since there were simply too many draft files and changes along the entire process, I only selected a few milestones in the designing process. Throughout the course of the designing, you can clearly see how much it changes over time to adhere to the concert's requirements. From this, I've learnt that art in actual application such as poster designs etc, has a much different approach and considerations to make along the way.

It goes beyond just expressing what you wish to express.
