Man of Colours, Digital Painting, 29 October 2011, 581x749px

Admittedly, this piece was done in no planning beforehand, all I wanted to do was to perhaps practice the male facial features, however, as it turned out, I began to try out something different from what I usually did. Usually, I would take the base colour of the skin then shade it was a slighter darker shade with little changes to the hue of the colour itself, this time, on beige I boldly used a dark blue/indigo shade to do the shadows, and then proceeded to use milky light green as highlights. Surprisingly the results didn't turn out as weird as one would think it would be. the forms were still defined and it was set apart from my other works as the prescence of different hues and colours on the form made it look more dynamic and interesting.
Other than the skin, I also considered how I would do the hair, it was difficult and I had to make many corrections at first as I had wanted to achieve an ambiguous effect, such that you could tell that was hair, it was darker than the skin but what colour it was was to be simply undescribable.
Had I been successful at this? I'd say to a certain extent, I ought to have evened out the different types of colours I used on the hair, as it is now, it is perhaps a little too reddish, while the blue and green highlights do contribute to the ambiguouity .

To add on, the sketchiness of the work is meant to be imitating the Impressionistic Art form which had presented itself in being 'incomplete' and undone, I also chose to adopt this as most of the time, I find that my sketches contain more emotion and expression than my complete works that may have been overpolished and in turn looked cold and stoic.

In a way, this work was a turning point for me, as I became much bolder in making use of colours, for examply using purple to shade the shadows and yellow as highlights, exploring the different colour combinations and effects were an insightful experience.

Artworks - Speedpainting - The Rose and the Nightingale
3:31 PM

The Rose and The Nightingale, Digital Painting, 26 October 2011, 504x768px
This piece of drawing is one of the few of mine which actually carries a story behind. As the title suggests, yes it was done in a form of a story illustration of a story called 'The Rose and The Nightingale', it was a story I came across when I was younger even though I can no longer remember where from.
I will not elaborate much on the story but the basis is that the Nightingale, as seen in the illustration had sacrified its blood (and thus it's life) to dye a white rose red as no red roses were to be found in that particular season, however a sad twist is that when the young man offered the blood red rose to the lady who demanded it in order for him to take her on a date callously rejected the rose and in doing so wasted the Nightingale's sacrifice.
As so, this piece has a melancholic atmosphere and the lady is a personification of the white rose in the process of being dyed red from the Nightingale's blood, this is evident in the roses that adorn her body still having certain white edges and there are red streaks appearing in her hair.
The composition is assymetrical, heavier on the right side and lighter on the left side helps the Nightingale to be able to capture attention of the viewer as its dark coloured body contrasts with the whiteness of the background.
As a whole, this is one of my favourite pieces of speedpainting as it embodies a story, something beyond the pixels.

Artworks - Curriculum - KIMONO [Sketchbook]
11:50 AM

KIMONO SKETCH BOOK :D
The cover is basically a sum-up of ideas and implementations of my KIMONO.
Close ups on Details on the cover page :

These braids are actually made from plain yarn (original colour is the white one), where 3 seperate braids are dyed in their respective colours before braiding the braids together (:

A sort of pun on my own name and KIMONO ..
The Japanese Kanji of KIMONO, it's infused with Watercolour illustration of Japanese prints, patterns are from an origami paper my aunt bought me from Japan.

First page of interior. Shows my initial brain-storming and I drew this eagerly as ideas were still swimming in my head when I first got the sketch book. It features a traditional-ish one integrated with the ideas of fans and oriental knots. The Second one is an impulsive and impractical design I did based on gothic-lolita, something I was quite fascinated with in the recent past.
This is a close-up of the bottom one, an illustration type of thing, and obviously when to comes to KIMONO you think of Geishas, no?
Here are some swirls that are inspired by Victorian and Japanese prints, it could have been used for certain parts of the Kimono?
BRAIDS! Yes the Idea hit me and I went ALL THE WAY with it on this particular sketch, exploring all types of ways I could use it
Yes, I even considered just stamping this victorian inspired pattern all over my Kimono, just like a Victorian wallpaper, but then I realised its really intricate. Oh I also integrated my passion for fashion inside, and I've made use of both positive and negative space. The pattern will still make sense whether you look from upside down or right side up (:
Experimentation with the braids using random yarn, I braided one strand then twirled it with another strand which was just a simple twine made out of 2 strings.
Here, I was inspired by a work on deviantart, and decided to to something similar and infuse Japanese prints into the face, (I like to draw faces) as something unique, and different. The Japanese prints are meant to suggest shadows and certain details on the face itself.

A bow made of a tight braid.
The twine thing from earlier, taken from a different angle, the colour scheme reminds of vegetables...
FANS - I adopted the idea of fans and developed it since I had already included it in my brainstorming page. Fans are also a good medium as it provides a form of texture so that my Kimono woud look more 3 dimensional as well as visually interesting, rather than flat forms on it.

Here is a close-up on the fan itself, you may be wondering what image is actually on the fans. On those fans are actually my old sketches done from Secondary One. I thought it would be more meaningful that way rather than having plain fans, they would be neat but without a personal touch. Furthermore, they were sitting in a random corner in my room, and some of them were not quite presentable enough (to me) to see the light of day hence I thought this would be the perfect oppurtunity to put them to good use!

Graphical Compositions of my Kimono..
First one (Top left hand corner) is the composition for the victorian inspired pattern (as shown above)

Here is basically an experiment of paper weaving, though in the end I did not quite manage to incorporate into my Kimono
An attempt to recreate pixel art through stamping with sqaured wooden blocks with arcrylic paint, apparently it was not as easy as it seems
A pixelised draft done in photoshop first

Well in fact this is NOT the end, my actual Kimono will be uploaded on a later date :D
