Amalgamate, 2012, Pencil on paper edited with Photoshop CS6

Part of my steampunk series, I went ahead to create this, using more intricate details. Also, instead of defining out the 'biological' and 'mechanical' parts, I sought to fuse them more in this work, hence the title - Amalgamate.

Using pencil to line out the details and some shadings, I had to use Photoshop to edit it before I could upload it online. Like I would do to a digital painting, I highlighted the lighted areas of the face and darkened my line art. The background was white but I darkened it using Photoshop to allow the subject matter to stand out more, while saving my lead.

In this work, my favourite parts is the steampunk flower formed by victorian embellishments, gears etc, as well as the use of the fan. Having made use of the fan in some of my previous works such as my Kimono, I thought it would be interesting to see it in a steampunk work. What surprised me was that after manipulating the edges of the fan to make it blend in with the mechanics, it did not look weird, in fact it was a nice touch to the composition amongst the many details that surround it.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1406306729358494233.post-45516337971843882962012-09-14T18:58:00.001+08:002012-09-14T18:59:35.842+08:00Artwork - Disguise

Pride of Disguise, 2011, Oil on Canvas

As part of the Sec 3 EOY Examinations, we had to choose amongst some themes to work upon. I chose disguise.

Having only painted in watercolour last year, I felt that I had lacked exposure towards oil painting. With some dabbling in digital painting, I felt that I had some experience with colouring, though not with the real thing. However I felt that I should take this chance to enrich myself and try something different.

My painting depicts a seemingly human figure all dressed up, applying make up. Why 'seemingly?' the peacock feathers at the tail that peak out signifies her supernatural non-human element, like a demon fox disguising as a human. Why do I not use a fox? I have attempted and tried, but I figured a peacock's tail is much more iconic and it implies pride.

Humans all have pride. Because of that pride, we dress up, put on make up, or other forms of psychological defenses and barriers to the extent of wearing a fake 'mask' when dealing with others. The subject matter here may be using make up, but it insinuates how people actually package and present themselves to others while masking the ugly sides of them. And that is the disguise.

Looking back at this painting one year later made me notice a few things - how inadequate my oil painting skills were. Working on it, it seemed to be the picture of my ideals. But right now, the flaws and areas for improvement are glaring.

Hopefully I'll have more oil painting opportunities in the future to better my skills.

For this work, it was done in conjuction with our SOVA syllabus last year on the Nanyang movement, focusing on the Liu Kang style in commemoration of his hundredth year.

Basically, we went through a series of his artworks and we were supposed to emulate his style and work from there.

Hence, in line with the Nanyang style subject matter, I chose the subject matter of a woman in Chinese opera costume. Since the Nanyang style focuses on the exotic and more cultural aspects of the local flavour in Singapore, I decided to do this as I recalled having seen Chinese Operas live in Singapore in some neighbourhood areas and it stuck to me. Nowadays we rarely see such occurrences. I figured while Liu Kang focused more on Bali, Indonesian cultures, I would go toward the Chinese culture.

I adopted a portrait as Liu Kang had featured portraits with rich cultural embellishments as well.
Such stunning effects of portraits is something which I had been striving to achieve in both traditional and digital media.

Each work is dynamic, the facial expressions and features are beautiful in each, yet they hold a form of individuality, expressing different emotions and feelings even with the eyes closed.

I have found myself trying to master drawing the most anatomically proportionate and aesthetically appealing face over the years of my art making. Yet, perhaps I have failed to realise how beauty can come in different forms and it is in such variations that make the features more realistic, and even more breathtaking.

I personally think that this artist's share of works bear some resemblance to my own, as I also like to embed fashion into portraiture. Also, I adore the way the artist had treated the paint, especially on the faces in terms of modelling the forms and applying the shadows and highlights. Clearly, there is still much for me to learn as an artist in terms of technique.

I will admit, I didn't draw this with the skull and morbidity in mind. It started off as a normal boy, but I had this sudden inspiration to inject in this idea. After all, I felt that a different twist to my artworks would do no harm, rather the concept had made it more interesting and dynamic than usual.

What makes this work different from my others is that this has probably the most detailed background I have worked on. On my others works, I have a great tendency to simply focus on the subject matter instead of the background afterwards. I had initially intended to do the same with this, however with a few tries it seemed to turn out better than expected and so I had retained it.

I very much like how the cool colors work against the warm red and yellow in the work and how the disintegration of the subject matter is in line with the direction of the clouds.

The disintegration and the revealing of the bones under the skin also show how youth or beauty is merely skin deep, eventually it'd all fade away, and what's under is merely white solid bones.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1406306729358494233.post-24810406742208518852012-09-10T16:21:00.000+08:002012-09-10T16:21:14.918+08:00Artwork - Dark Side (first comission!)

Dark Side, Digital Painting, 2012

After a long break of having a lack of inspiration to draw or digital paint anything, someone who had been viewing my display of works on my Facebook page had suddenly expressed interest in having me paint something for him! Delighted by how I had been recognized and presented a opportunity to showcase my work, I took on the commission and did this work.

He did not restrict much but he mentioned about liking the splattered effects from my Geisha work and some of my steampunk related works. Hence in this work I tried to link them up together.

I wanted to create a work such that the subject matter is seemingly connected and joint to the side with dark tendrils creeping and consuming her gradually. At the top, I used a normal brush from photoshop ti create a smoky, inky effect which the 'darkness' dissipated from to make the top look a little heavier to balance the composition.

Being largely dull and cool, the image lacked warm colors which I used as an chance for me to use the speck of red in her eyes as a focal point. The process of drawing the face was not as easy as I had expected. After attempting to draw it by myself a few times, it always tended to look wrong, not worthy of being there. What's more, as a commission, I was more determined to achieve perfection. Hence I sought to look for photographic references which had helped greatly in the forms of the face. It turns out that we sometimes have to stop and look for references instead of stubbornly going ahead blindly.
Overall, I was highly satisfied with this painting and I will print it out soon in A3 and pass it to him.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1406306729358494233.post-39210081021775345952012-09-10T16:05:00.002+08:002012-09-10T16:12:23.604+08:00CommmentsBelow are the links of posts I've commented on for my peers (:
My comment of Ashley's is as shown below as there were a few technical errors:

this is part two of my andy goldsworthy task which is long overdue, but still. this is me, stepping into andy's shoes and trying to imitate him in his 'environmental sculpturing' (as some of his critics call it), and create something new. i tried, twice, because i didn't really like the first one. so this is the second one i came up with, inspired by nature itself. my composition isn't a sculpture per say, despite its three dimensionality, because it doesnt really stand up on its own, however, i'd think of it as a flat representation of a deconstructed flower.
i imitated andy's style of using the the elements from nature- i used petals of a rose and small stalks of flowers, and assembled the composition with my bare hands. the dark purple rose petals and arranged in a circle surrounding the tiny lavender flowers in the middle. this is me trying to mimic andy's pebbles artwork (the circular motion). and surrounding that are little white stalks of flowers to frame the artwork.
to understand the rationale behind this piece, you must first know that the flowers i used are all dried up, so technically they are dead. so while andy tries to capture the transitory moment of nature at its peak of its beauty, i try to find the beauty after the life of nature burns out. this might seem ambitious, or idealistic (as some may say death is not one to be admired), but i think that beauty is only in the matter of perspective. hence, here i try to recreate what the flowers once were, by tearing them apart only to assemble them to what they were before, just in a simpler form, in the hopes of preserving their moment of beauty in their afterlife.

A continuation to my Steam Punk Series. I wanted to create one which has a frontal profile. While I find that the face and embellishments on the first one seemed much better, I think that the body area of this work looks more defined than that of the previous one as there is a greater consideration of the concept. Right at the center there is this angularly shaped container which represents the heart, with some sort of liquid of fuel inside. Around it, are the gears interlocking together working together in a system which is rather similar to how our biological bodies may work.

Also, I incorporated a flower, a rose into the composition of the headpiece of the character. I thought it was provided a different twist and element to that of the image. Being in pencil, it is not very clear to the viewer whether the flower is a real flower or one that is made of brass. Personally, I feel that it works both ways but I ought to put in an effort to have a clear stand to illustrate the flower in the preferred way such that it is clear even in a monotonous image.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1406306729358494233.post-439430991559112022012-09-09T21:38:00.000+08:002012-09-09T21:38:16.099+08:00Artwork - Steam Punk

Discovering this theme known as Steam Punk is probably one of the greatest things I have discovered in the course of my artistic journey. Being interested in the Victorian era style of floral motifs and fashion, it had a great impact on my subject matter for awhile. Yet, it had gotten old. Steampunk brings in a sense of detail and intricacy which felt like something that had been missing all the while.

Being very attracted to the high level of details demanded by this theme, I attempted at a work which featured a side profile of a woman with gears and other steampunk elements to make up her shape.

The gears, keys and wings were great to play around with to create a nice composition, but I did have to juggle between the highly intricate parts and the more simple elements to create the variation I was going for.

This also allowed me the opportunity to incorporate detailed drawings of accessories and elements into portraits.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1406306729358494233.post-66347641811938601302012-09-09T21:27:00.000+08:002012-09-09T21:27:46.594+08:00Artwork - NJRC Booth Design

National Junior Robotics Competition Booth Design

Just this week, I participated in the National Junior Robotics Competition. Contrary to what people would think of in a Robotics competition, it has several aspects such as Booth Design, Entrepreneurship, etc.. Hence, I could utilise my aesthetics ability to contribute in these segments of the composition.

Seeking reference from my senior's design from last year, it seems as if they tied in really closely with the theme which was domestic robots. Hence, with the robolyimpics theme this year, I tied in the robotics elements with the olympic elements. One part that shows this unity the most is the Olympic symbol made using gears. Given the interconnective nature of the gears, it ties in with the encircling of the five olympic rings in forming the logo.

As the main body of the robot, I adopted the idea of using a basketball scoreboard, putting our group name, 'Huh?" in the screen of the board, along with the year. Extending from the main body of the robot is six robotic arms performing the six sports from the olympics which our robot was tasked to do in the mission provided for our category, boxing, weight-lifting, fencing, basketball, judo and cycling. Hence it also ties in with the competition.

While not clearly visible, the orange strips on the two sides are actually running tracks made out of orange paper then delineated with maskng tape to create the track lines for the effect. Around the remaining empty spaces, we placed different lego heads with varying expressions all around as well as question marks '?' which shows our group name.

Overall, we were quite satisfied by the result of our efforts in creating this booth design!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1406306729358494233.post-1377969220558042242012-09-09T21:12:00.005+08:002012-09-14T15:39:54.282+08:00Inspiration - Painting in a new Dimension
Riusuke Fukahori

This Japanese artist had adopted a unique way of painting with the complicated process of resin combined with painting. He had invested a large amount of time into his fish painting prior to adopting such a technique which shows the amount of effort and preparation to achieve such a level. It greatly inspires me how he has used such an unconventional approach to painting to bring his paintings into a new dimension - 3D as opposed to the usual paintings on a 2D surface.

I think what is most fascinating about his work is how one would not think that the artwork was created by painting at first sight. It would look more like a sculpture. The use of the resin and the layers of paint he did is a highly innovative method with amazing results.

What we can learn from him is how he ventured to experiment for a whole new approach to painting in such a unique methodology. In a way, he has opened a whole new possibility in this aspect. Other than gold fishes, other subject matter could also be painted and made to look like 3D objects suspended in resin.

From this, I think I can try to explore new means and ways to incorporate painting into 3D art in such a manner.

For this part of my kimono, I bought white rope and then get some black rope from Jubilee. I dyed some of the white rope to reddish pink as shown in the picture. Although the ropes were already textured, I thought it'd create a more intricate effect when I braid them all together in contrasting colours, it looked well against the Kimono and fit in nicely.

A concept I adopted here for my Kimono is fans. It has a wonderful 3 dimensional effect and it is simple to create. To make up for its simplicity in methodology, I came up with a fan pattern and folded the fans accordingly to fit in. The layering of the many fans put together created an all new effect and it was even better after I inked them. To colour the fans, I put diluted ink into the spray and sprayed them all over the completed fans to create a splattered and gradient effect on the fans. However I think it was too watery and it made the fans kind of flimsy. Luckily, it was better after it dried.

What really strikes me in her works is not just the accuracy, pictorial representation of the subject matter, though it is crucial. On scrutiny, we can still see the visible brushstrokes that look raw, yet smooth with colour. It is absolutely amazing how she does her digital paintings in such a style. Also, all her paintings has an individual style and atmosphere to it. In each, the lighting is different, even the expression the subject matter varies accordingly evoking enough emotion to allow the viewers to sense and understanding. In this aspect I still have much to learn from her as my illustrations do not often show emotion, and the background atmosphere seems dull and undeveloped as contrasting with this young artist here.

This series was drawn on paper with pen and markers, scanned and edited with Photoshop.

During that time, I was immensely into the art of fashion, especially couture. The bolder, the more extravagant, the better. While my choice of colours were largely limited by the number of markers I had, the bold colours provided an extra edge to my designs. Back then, my drawing style was highly stylised as seen below with the elongated limbs and representational figures. Many of my friends had critiqued it as unreal, too skinny, but I was stubbornly insisted on it. Looking back, this stylisation, while unreal and 'too skinny', had to a certain extent, added to the charm of my past works.

It was referenced from Alice in Wonderland of which we had adopted for our Long Term Problem.
Despite the hours of conceptualisation and designing, the shirt was never made as there was some pricing issues.. This was designed somewhere last year.

For each character design, I sought to encapsulate the unique qualities of each character, with references to both the original fairy tale as well as our very own OM representation of it.

The colour of the shirt (hot pink) is meant to create a bold statement.
Though the background of the design is white, it is meant to signify a negative space, our base colour chosen is actually cream or ivory.

We both simultaneously agreed that this design approach would be good as it is one that has yet to be adopted for other CCA t-shirts and there is much to expand on in terms of the drawings. Hence after brainstorming on the different elements we could include eg. computers, headphones, robots... etc, we came up with a rough composition and sketched it on paper.

Once that was done, we proceeded to ink it using black marker pens. The colours were digitally added in by myself on photoshop, where I amended some flaws and cleaned up the image.
The following shows some concepts and ideas that develop over time.

At first, since the concert was called 'Heartbeat', the initial imagery that hit me was of course, a heart. In order to incorporate both the terms 'beat' and the concert element into it, I thought that creating the shape of a musical note using negative space across the heart would well convey this in a simplistic and direct manner. I wanted the overall feel of the concert poster to be appealing, dynamic, yet clear cut, as seen bu the solid lines from the elements and the fonts. I used cherry red and teal as the main colours as I felt that the colours complemented each other very well and it was a good balance between warm and cool colours.

To add an interesting element to the poster, I used a long striped teal line to cut across the side of the poster. The space cut out on the right side felt too empty so I incorporate footprints to show the dance aspects of the concert.

Description
The image depicts a lone tree right in the center of the painting. The tree is formed by large visible brushstrokes with intricately interlaced branches without leaves. Mondrian uses arbitrary colours to create contrast. While the painting is dominantly blue, the bottom ends of the tree is littered with specks of red/orange which makes the picture more interesting

Analysis
As seen from the brushstrokes and choice of colour, we can see some influences from the Fauvist movement as well as the Post-Impressionist Movement. The rough and choppy brushstrokes here indicate a sense of motion of the tree. the composition is also imbalanced, being heavier towards the right side.

Interpretation
As the only subject matter of the painting, the tree emits a sense of lonely solitude. As there are no leaves, it suggests the notion of death and decay. Though there is a faint horizon, there seems to be nothing beyond. It seems to be left unfinished to expose the raw emotions behind the painting. It is also slightly ironic how the painting is dominantly blue while the subject matter is supposed to be a red tree. The only hint of it is the bark and certain parts of the tree which is highlighted with red. This could show how the colour and life of the tree is being sapped.

Judgement
Mondrian is successful in portraying the sense of loneliness and bleak atmosphere of the tree. He strategically placed a single tree right in the center to allow viewers to focus their attention on it and notice the lack of other subject matter surrounding it to create a sense of solitude. The colour blue is an emotive colour for melancholy and it surrounds the entire painting, cloaking it with its solemn atmosphere.

Grey Tree, 1911

Description
Similarly to the work above Mondrian has yet again painted a lone tree. This tree is placed in a more balanced composition, almost being symmetrical. The branches are stark and contrasts with the light grey background. Thick brushstrokes are used and is applied in a painterly manner where viewers can see the individual strokes. The background is comprised with several shades of grey which resembles blocks of colour.

Analysis
The tree branches are drawn across in thick curves which are significantly more stylised than in the previous work, it seems to have been painted on in sweeping motions across the canvas as indicated by the curved branches. The brushstrokes too, are also much thicker and are applied differently. It is choppier, and seems to be applied hastier. The subject matter looks more abstract than in the Red Tree. The painting is brought to life by the dynamism of the different shades of grey in the background, having a slight vignette effect with the core of the painting having the lightest grey.

Interpretation
Contrary to the Red Tree, the Grey Tree, though with a much more solemn title appears to be much more vibrant in spite of its lack of colour. As the dark grey/black branches are a stark contrast to the much lighter grey background, the tree stands out much more. It appears to be a scene of a tree in winter. Though it has no leaves, it does not look as bleak as it did. As the painting looks crowded with branches, it does not look lonely or melancholic, instead, it seems to be pridefully showing off its majestic branches even without its leaves.

Judgement
If the artist was trying to portray a sad, solemn painting of the Grey Tree, I would think that he was not successful as it offers a more domineering and majestic approach towards the leafless tree. However if that was not his aim, he would then be successful. A single leafless tree is conventionally thought to suggest sadness, loneliness and decay, yet in this painting, it does not seem so lifeless and in fact, goes against that notion.

Composition no.ii (Composition in Line and Colour), 1913

Description
This work depicts blocks of squares and rectangles packed together. The various blocks are of a slightly muted pastel colours put together. They are delineated by bold black outlines which intersect each other in a systemic grid-like network.

Analysis
As with the title suggests, the painting is fundamentally formed with only lines and colour. Though the image is flat, the colours are not of solid blocks, they appear to be splotched and patchy throughout. The lines of the painting are bolder and darker in the center of the painting and it eventually fades out, creating an impression of infinity as it looks like it may never end. The painting style here greatly differs from that of his past works as it no longer shows recognisable forms of subject matter, instead it is only mere lines and colour. This could show his interest towards geometric shapes and abstraction.

Interpretation
From what I see, the image looks like a brick wall comprised of bricks of different shapes, sizes and colour. Yet it is a mere abstract piece of work. The tones and hues of this work are pastel, evoking a sense of peace and serenity in viewers. With the darker and more concentrated core of the painting, it shows how Mondrian has a liking for vignette effects as evidently shown in this work and the previous one.

Judgement
This work is successful in emitting a sense of serenity with the use of colours. The rigidity and boldness of the lines also serve to draw the viewer's attention as each stroke is in a straight line properly drawn to define each individual shape to enhance the neatness and geometric effect he had wished to achieve.

Composition with large blue plane, red, black yellow and grey, 1921

Description
This work seems to be a further stylised and highly abstracted version of Composition no.ii
There is only grey, yellow, blue, red and black in this painting at seemingly random areas of the canvas. They are yet again delineated with thicker, bolder black outlines into rectangle that together form the canvas.

Analysis
As opposed to the painterly manner he adopted in his previous works, this one seems to have been done in modern technology today with shape tools and outlines. However this was done in 1921, when clearly there was no such technology. Mondrian may have had a foresight towards modern art. The painting has a greatly asymmetrical composition with a great patch of blue on the top right hand corner of it.

Interpretation
This work can be seen as a sort of experimentation on Mondrian's part as the title implies that there are many other compositions. This painting seems to echo abstract expressionism in terms of colour field painting and the geometrical abstract approach towards art. Only, this work provokes a different set of notion towards art.

Judgment
Mondrian is highly successful in this artwork as such a concept is definitely fresh and unseen from any other past movements. In fact, it has brought the mild abstraction and geometric-ism to a higher level. Furthermore, back in 1921, this work would have impacted the people much greatly than it would now.

Red and Blue Chair, Gerrit Rietveld, 1917

Mondrian's works are parked under a greater umbrella called the De Stijl movement. Another such artist is Gerrit Rietveld, with one of his works as shown above. Clearly, the overarching themes of the De Stijl movements include the geometrical shapes and straight black outlines, along with the use of primary colours. While such a chair design would be more accepted in current context, we have to remember that such a work was produced in 1917, where most furniture would probably would have been grander and formed by curved lines.

Clearly, such aspects of design has been a great impact and inspiration towards modern art and graphical design, creating a lasting impression. Even now, there are artists and design concepts which makes use of pure straight lines and geometric shapes in vivid colours to create a dynamic visual effect as Mondrian had done.

Below is a work which I've worked with my dear friends - Beilin, Rachel and Jubilee on :D
It is an emulation of Piet Mondrian's work using his noted characteristics of having bold geometrical shapes. However we felt that it'd be better if we added a black outline around it!

Personal Values, Rene Magritte, 1952, Belgium.

Everyone has their own set of values; things which we prioritise, items we hold close to our hearts. In this work 'Personal values', Magritte has depicted his own set of personal values in the form of a surrealist painting as seen above.

Description

In this painting, Magritte illustrates a scene of a bedroom.

The work is in predominantly cool colours due to the wallpaper of skies and clouds. At first sight, the bedroom looks mundane with the typical wooden bed and cupboard each at the left and right side of the room respectively. The cupboard however has a mirror that reflects a small window at the other end of the room not visible to us from this perspective.

What would capture the viewer's attention to the strangeness of this painting is the size of the various objects lying around the room. there is an oversized brown comb resting on the bed with its tip almost in contact with the ceiling. There is a blusher/shaving brush that can be found on the wardrobe. There is also a round bar of soap the size of a coffee table in front of the wardrobe. In the middle of the room, there is a translucent turqoise wine glass. It's height is unrealistically as tall as the wardrobe and it has a abnormally large match stick right next to it where it is situated next to the bed.

As a whole this work shows us a mundane scene of a bedroom, made interesting by the unusual sizes of the various everyday objects lying around seemingly random around the room, in a balanced composition.

Analysis

The painting has a photorealistic quality. All the details in the painting seem to have been painted on meticulously with brushstrokes so fine that we can barely see its traces. The details, patterns and prints seem to have been painted in utmost precision. Such could have been done to further emphasize how normal and realistic every is, yet shocking the viewers by blowing up the various objects, creating a sense of doubt to the viewer whether the objects are just extraordinarily huge or if the bedroom itself is in fact in a minute scale.

Furthermore, contrary to what other surrealists painter does, such as Dali, he does not involve himself in fantasies, rather he makes use of manipulation of scale of objects to create the dream-like and unusual effect that deems the work surreal.

Interpretation

The wallpapers of clouds and sky could possibly be an ironic element in this painting. While the room is bounded by the four sides of the wall, the wallpaper creates an illusion such that creates a sense of space, as if the room is suspended in the sky, representing freedom. This could be symbolic of our own mindsets and values. While we may believe that we can have any sorts of values that we can deem ours, they are always bounded by an inconspicuous boundary that we may be unaware of, yet we do not cross it.

The scene of the bedroom itself is symbolic of own's inner state of mind. In the tangible world, the only place where we probably feel the safest, with the greatest sense of belonging and identity is probably our own bedroom.

Magritte has made use of each of the objects to represent his own personal values.

Comb:
This probably represents how he prioritises the need to be kept neat and presentable to public eyes. It is also a comment on middle class life and conventionality.

Soap:
This would undoubtedly symbolise personal hygiene as a part of his personal values.

Match Stick:
Being next to the bed, it involves a French pun which hints at sexual desires.

Wine Glass:
Could possibly refer to alcoholic pleasure

Judgement

In trying to portray his own set of personal values in his work, I feel that Magritte had done a successful job in bringing this across. The items he had picked were symbolic and easy to relate to its meaning due to the realistic representation. Furthermore, he had scaled up the various objects as if it was in direct proportion towards how much he values it. Apart from this reason, the scaled up objects also serve as a subject of attention for viewers as they would be hooked on to the painting at first by the oddness of the painting. Only then would they pay sufficient attention to decipher the various symbols and make sense out of the work, which deems the work successful in relaying its message.

My Personal Values

In response to Magritte's work, I went on to explore my own personal values and eventually came up with a sketchy sketch as shown above. Admittedly, it lacks Magritte's professionalism in form and painting..
Nevertheless, this depicts some of the items I find that is core in my own set of Personal Values.

Bed
Sleep. The bed represents the need for rest and relaxation which I personally find essential to our lives. If we never stop working, to let ourselves recover, it then has adverse impacts on what we strive to achieve.

Watch
This is a watch I have worn for nearly four years now. The watch naturally represents time. While time is intangible, I had used a watch to symbolise its importance to my life. Life is hectic sometimes, there are simply too little time for the many things we have to accomplish out of responsibility and desire. Life, is actually rather short. Hence time ought to be treasured and valued.

Key
My house key symbolises a sense of belonging and home which everyone should deserve and need for a place to belong in. Also, it represents my sense of security.

Spectacles
As someone who has short-sightedness, I can never leave my spectacles for long. While I can still technically see what is around me, reading minute letters are beyond me. Without my spectacles,I won't be able to read, draw or see things in detail. The thought of losing that can be frightening. It is just how much I value my sight.

Wooden Drawing Model/Pencil
The Wooden Drawing Model and Pencil both represents my passion towards art. While the Drawing Model tells of my preference in figure drawing/drawing of humans, the pencil is there in place of even a paint brush because it was the first tool I had picked up for art making.

Hanging Dress
Needless to say, the hanging dress symbolises my passion towards fashion and perhaps hints at my vanity. It also shows the import I place on being well dressed and presentable, in a fashionable manner. It is purposefully placed near the Wooden drawing model and pencil to show how closely I place art and fashion, I see fashion as art and art can be made into fashion.

Mirror
While this could be a prime indicator of my feminine vanity, this mirror is mostly to represent my value on reflection. Often, I see a need to reflect back on my past actions and the mirror can also be a form of mimic, where this part of me may subconsciously mimic another....

With that, my seven 'values' had been haphazardly strewn across the room aside from those purposefully placed as mentioned. This itself reflects my not-so-tidy nature, where I see beauty in disorder.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1406306729358494233.post-82899442669252342752012-07-13T19:18:00.002+08:002012-07-13T19:20:13.488+08:00Blog Task - Reptiles, Mc Escher
Art. It's subject matter are mere figments of an artist's creation. More often that not, in penning our visions down on paper, we are bringing our creations to life. However, donning them on mere paper is only 2-dimensional. It is not exactly alive.
Now, imagine you've left your half finished artwork on your desk top, and you've walked away. Ever wondered how it'd be like if our artworks come to life? The seemingly flat dimension on the paper could emerge out, such that it now has a 3 dimensional form, a tangible reality.

That is probably what Mc Escher was trying to portray in his work as shown below.

Escher, MC. "Reptiles". Lithograph. 1943.

In the lithography by Escher, it depicts a opened up sketchbook, with a half drawn page featuring his abstract tessellation of reptiles. The surroundings are scattered with miscellaneous objects such as plants, books, bottle, cups and a polygonal 3-D object. From the illustrated tessellation in the sketchbook, the reptiles seem to gradually materialise into its form from the bottom left hand corner of the illustration. One by one, it seemingly emerges from the illustration and climbs upon the other objects around, going in a cyclical motion. The reptiles then eventually crawl over the book, the cup and the polygonal object in a circle, back into the illustration where the reptile is once again gradually integrated back into it's 2-Dimension form.

The lithography is completely black and white, with a centered composition where all the subject matters are focus in the middle. The viewer's perspective seems to come from above, watching as the surrealistic progression of vision and reality taking place. Escher has also made use of the forms and style to depict the 'real' reptiles and the illustrated reptiles respectively. While the illustrated reptiles are simply static, fixed in their positions with their forms delineated by straight rigid lines with little details, when it comes into reality, the reptiles looks increasiangly realistic with smoother and more intricate lines of details that depicts it's scales and body parts. Furthermore, with the play of highlights and shadows, Escher had effectively distinguished the real and the illustrated and the real reptiles.

In this work, while the mood seems to be dulled by the monotonous colours, it also seems to have a lively note. This liveliness is brought about by the motion of the reptiles in their cyclical motion around the artwork. It can be also seen to be slightly eerie as it is surreal to have reptiles emerging from illustrations and moving about.

For me, what makes this incredibly fascinating and surreal is how the artworks are depicted to come into life. Furthermore, he had managed to keep every other object in accurate scale, as if everything were perfectly realistic. The transition from illustration to real reptiles were also very intricately and carefully done such that there is a visible transition which is gradual, making the unrealistic look much more realistic.

Overall, by the positioning of limbs of the reptiles, it seems to have a sense of rhythm as it crawls over the objects back into the illustration. It shows a surrealistic scene of an illustration coming into life and the reverse as it continues on in an eternal cycle.

This work is done by an Artist I had come across in Deviantart a few years back. As I saw Escher's Reptiles, I was inevitably reminded of this work. Both of them had shared the equally fascinating concept of illustrations and reality, and had successfully depicted them on paper. The overarching similarity is how the illustrations in both artworks shows how the illustration comes into life and how both elements are seemingly intertwined.

What would be different is that in 'Reptiles', the integration and disintegration goes both ways in a cycle, while in the 'Prisoner of my own', the transition only goes one way in terms of the transition between drawing and reality. However, there is an extra element of twist in 'Prisoner of my own' where the hand, which is the main subject matter whose chains are emerging from the drawings is the same hand that is used to draw the weight that would be imprisoning him. In a way, there is a different form of cycle present in 'Prisoner of my own'

Both works include such incredulous concepts that breaches between our mere visions and reality. Such surrealism can also be put to symbolism as done in 'Prisoner of my own'. Perhaps I could keep such a concept in mind for future inspirations!

First, let me explain why I chose this work.
The first moment I laid eyes on this, I certainly knew it could 'fit' Singapore. Why? Because it has this sense of familiarity when I look at it. Singapore, as a tropical country that provides best conditions for floral and fauna, grassy, forest-y areas in Singapore certainly exist such as the Botanic Gardens and Mac Ritchie reservoir. Furthermore, I have also seen leaves quite similar to that in the artwork, similar shapes as well as shade of the leaves. These grassy patches are also commonplace in Singapore. Hence if we were to reproduce such a work in Singapore, it'd definitely be possible!

Description :

This work mainly depicts brown leaves splayed on a grass patch strategically to form a spiral composition. Some leaves are first placed flat on the ground before another leaf, slightly rolled up is placed above it. The grass patch is a predominantly earthy green shade while the leaves are a warm shade of brown providing contrast. As mentioned in the title of the work, the leaves are greased, hence allowing more light to reflect off the leaves to create a polished and smooth effect. Aside from that, the spiral also creates a vanishing point right in the center of the spiral. Overall, the work has a balanced composition with the spiral as the main subject matter.

Aanalysis :

The artist had made good use of the manipulation of the leaves from merely splaying it down flat and coiling them. From doing so, different effects are created. While the leaves lay flat on the ground seem mundane, the coiled up leaves seem to protrude from the ground, thus having more defined shadows and highlights to define the shape of the spiral. The viewer's eyes are also instantly drawn towards the spiral created by the coiled up leaves.
Upon scrutiny, we can also see that the artist had tried to make use of the different shades of brown on the leaves in the artwork. He alternated a lighter and darker shade of the leaves for the coiled up portion of the leaf in order to make the work more dynamic.
The grease used on the leaves also provides a shine for the leaves, making the leaves look smoother. This in turn provides a contrast in texture against the smooth and shiny leaves against the dull grassy background.
In order to fix the leaves on the ground, the artist also uses thorns, an organic material most likely obtained from the surrounding environment. This is meaningful as this makes the artwork purely organic without using any modern tools in its execution, making it a truly organic artwork.
The fact that it had been placed under the tree of which it had fell out of also provides a deeper meaning for this work as this makes it site specific.

Discuss this work in relation to another named work by another artist that operates in a similar way.

While I see some connection of Synthetic Cubism in this work, I think Henri Matisse with his collage/cut outs has a greater relation towards this work.
Henri Matisse, like Andy Goldsworthy were both interested in organic forms. This is clearly depicted from their use of subject matter where Goldsworthy had used real organic leaves in his works, Matisse had made use of paper cut outs which are in abstract forms of flora/fauna.
Though both artists have very different styles in their art, along with the altogether difference in uses of medium, composition etc., we can still identify the similarities in the way that they operate.
Neither of them had used any form or drawing or paintings in this series of works, rather, they used existing shapes (In Matisse's case, after cutting) and played around with their composition to achieve their desired result.

In the version on the right, I tried experimenting with a more sketchy, anime like style. I wanted to see if such a style would suit me better than my usual style which would belong to the one on the left.

With the one on the right, the bold outlines makes it look like a comic, at the same time providing more definition of the forms. The colours also seem to appear more vibrant due to its flatness and lack of blending. In a way, it is more stylised than my usual style.

However, the one on the left has more defined form, along with the highlights and shadows. There is also a shine in the hair.

Personally despite trying a new style, it is difficult for me to simply abandon my old tendencies, as I do not only find pleasure in viewing the final result of the artwork, I greatly enjoy the process as well. One of my favourite parts of drawing/colouring is in adding shadows and highlights to the subject matter, seemingly bringing it to life with each and every stroke.

Hence, in adopting such a style on the right, there is not much opportunities to shade or highlight. However I will not completely disregard it, under certain circumstances I may still adopt this style to suit, but for now I will probably stick with my current style.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1406306729358494233.post-45041751073918951322012-02-14T21:19:00.000+08:002012-02-14T21:36:27.828+08:00Inspiration/Artwork - Tknk - GeishaArtist : tknk

Once again another artist from Deviantart. I do not know much information this artist, other than the fact that he/she is Japanese and I personally do think she's a she.

I came across this artist pretty early, say in Secondary Two when I was still developing my digital art skills. She provided a great source of inspiration for me. Even so, I tried as much as possible not to imitate her style too much, and rather, learn from it.

What I consider as a successful artist is when one embodies a distinctive style. This artist has done it.
The human figure - a subject matter that will probably never be unused in the aesthetic world has been portrayed by many artists before. It honestly is not easy to develop a unique personal style that can be easily identified. Even I myself have faced problems and difficulty in terms of developing a unique style of human form that solely belong to me.

This artist, Takenaka had successfully created her own style of drawing humans, it has made her artworks easier to spot and sets it apart from the others.

http://tknk.deviantart.com/art/no-title-124081166?q=gallery%3Atknk%2F11992723&qo=15

In her works, although she may not do detailed modelling as do some artists do, the forms, are still able to be presented well and suits the atmosphere in the artwork. Even the little areas where she does actually shade is strategically well done; such can only be an indication of her experience and capability as an artist. Clearly, she also likes to make use of patterns to give the images some texture and detail, in which case worked very well for her.

As seen, I have adopted the subject matter of Geishas, and not surprisingly it seemed that I had an obsession over it during a period of time. Similarly I juxtaposed many elements and trying to create intricate and detailed head pieces and hairdos for the Geishas. However, upon reflection now, the difference in levels is still jarring. It will probably be a long way to go before I can achieve such great standards.

This piece however, didn't disappoint me quite so much. Perhaps it was the flexibility provided by the mechanical pencil, I seemed to be able to add even more intricate details easily. Furthermore, I sought to take reference from some Japanese prints paper that my Aunt got from me from Japan for the prints on the Kimono.

All in all, I hope to continue improving my drawing skills not only in terms of digital painting but perhaps I could brush up on my line art as well.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1406306729358494233.post-69000194764045260142012-02-14T18:30:00.000+08:002012-02-14T18:31:58.145+08:00Inspiration - agnes-cicileBy chance, I cam across this exremely skilled artist on deviantart.com, a community of artists.
Her page is here : http://agnes-cecile.deviantart.com/

I was appalled by her unique artistic style in using arbitrary colours to present a representational forms of the human face, which I am fascinated in as well.
In her works, it is as if every stroke or spot contributed to the very composition and detail of the painting. The seemingly abstract washes and splatters of paint actually gives the viewer freedom to imagine or visualise it as different things such as flowers. This could perhaps draw some link to impressionism as the details are vague and could be interpreted as mere impressions. Since the paint do not seem to take up every inch of the paper, it could be seen to be not fully complete, contributing to the impressionistic style. Moreover, there seems to be a balance between the warm and cool colours that provide a suitable contrast that pleases the eye. Despite the odd use of colours, the forms do not look unrealistic or absurd, instead it gives the artworks a sense of intensity and emotion.
Another connection could be to surrealism as real humans are defnitely not coloured that way and in the third image it is impossible for a bird to be embedded within a person's head.
